names information

We heralds get a lot of questions about names. You want to name your persona this or that, but why isn't it possible, you wonder.

So here are some sources that are acceptable by the Heralds -- and I mean my bosses here, the ones who'll pass along your would-be name to the Laurel office for checking, hopefully.

(the Laurel office's list of books they'll outright accept as sources for your name) http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/Annotatedname.html

(Laurel's information about names) http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names.html

(The Academy of Saint Gabriel: used a lot of the time by heralds of the Kingdom as a source; it's a giant database of name information regarding names from all over the world -- the advantage is that it's online, like the Laurel list) http://www.s-gabriel.org/

Just a note, because it came up in a search I'm doing on someone's name: the College of Heralds has debated about http://www.Wikipedia.org as a source for names, and the basic concensus is that as long as it's not the ONLY name source, they're ok with it.
